Day 3: Barwon River 56-99km

Wednesday 4 August 2021 39.1km paddling

The day 3 morning summary
The Barwon River

Ted was woken by a herd of goats staring at his tent in wonder at the strange device was that had landed in their paddock. The downside of clear night skies was the near zero evening temperatures, so we were grateful to have packed the snow camping gear, even though Ted found his -5 degree sleeping bag not warm enough. Soft Darwinites struggle when it gets below 20 degrees Celsius. Ted whipped up another breakfast of coffee, bacon, eggs, tomatoes and onion on the morning fire, so again I didn’t need to resort to the muesli.

Lunch at the 78km mark resulted in me leaving the only Garmin and Sony video camera charging cable behind, minimising the use of the Sony camera (mounted on the canoe bow) and resorting to the back-up Garmin for calculating our distances.

The height of the river meant we could take a 1.5km long detour that cut out a 6km bend past Beemery Point. This was different paddling to the main river channel: requiring negotiating large, flooded red gums, with swift, shallower currents. The closer, lower banks associated with the short-cut providing broader views of the countryside surrounding the river.
